Overview:
I’ve always thought the SelectTech 552 Dumbbells are one of those rare pieces of equipment that just make training simpler. You turn the dial, lift, and move straight into your next set, no plate swapping, no wasted time. It’s the kind of convenience that actually helps you stay focused on your workout instead of the setup.
They’re solid and feel well-balanced in hand. The grip is comfortable, with just the right amount of texture so you don’t worry about slipping when things get sweaty. I’ve noticed the mechanism feels sturdy too, nothing loose or rattling, which is a good sign for long-term use.
I also like how these dumbbells scale perfectly for most lifters. The weight range (5–52.5 lbs) covers everything from light accessory work to solid compound exercises, and the 2.5-pound increments are a great touch for making small, controlled progress.
If I had to nitpick, I’d say they are a bit wide at lighter settings: that’s pretty common for this style of adjustable dumbbell. You get used to it fast, though, and it’s a fair trade-off for how much space and time they save.
Overall, I think the SelectTech 552s are a fantastic home gym option, especially for people who train regularly and want something quick, compact, and reliable. They simplify your setup, free up floor space, and make your workouts flow smoothly. For me, that’s a win every time.
What are the Pros & Cons of SelectTech 552?
Rapid Weight Change
Pros:
- Rapid Weight Changing Mechanism: Changing weights rapidly is a unique specialty feature of this training equipment that allows you to switch weights within a few seconds. Extremely useful function to switch from one training set to another, from one exercise to another, without taking any extensive, time-consuming weight-changing breaks in between.
- Well Built: SelectTech 552 is a new, stylish innovation combined with built-in sturdy details to make it durable.
- Comfortable Grip: These dumbbells feel good in the hands due to nicely designed anti-slip, ergonomic handles that provide a comfortable grip.
- Saves Up Space for Home Gym: Being compact is easily one of the biggest pros in the SelectTech 552 pro list if you need to save space. Instead of having dozens of dumbbells cluttering your home gym to complete your training routines, you can use one.
- Comes With Warranty: The manufacturer offers a 2-year limited warranty on all parts, a 5-year warranty on weight plates, 1-year labor warranty.
- Wide Array of Weight Sets: Combines 15 different sets of weights into one dumbbell; weights ramp up from 5 pounds to 52.5 pounds for each dumbbell.
Cons:
- Sturdy yet Delicate: Since SelectTech 552 Dumbbells consist of several plastic parts, they tend to have a limited life span & can break down: Especially if you happen to be the “Hulk-smash” type of trainee who likes to throw dumbbells on the floor. Beware.
- Mixed Feedback Towards Service: Quick service & well-mannered responses, yet some folks have claimed that customer service is unreachable & they’ve had issues claiming warranty.
- Expensive: You should consider this one as an investment – Well worth every penny, yet SelectTech 552 is rather a luxury item than your everyday sturdy workhorse.
- Knock-Off Alert: Keep your eye out & pay attention to details to confirm it indeed is a genuine set of SelectTech 552 Dumbbells that you received, not some random Chinese replica. Check for approved, trusted distributors to avoid the hassle of returning faulty equipment & to be aware of fake sets that are being sold.

How Can Using Dumbbells Improve Your Grip Strength?
Do Bent-Over Rows
The SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbell is an excellent tool for developing support grip, crush grip, and overall forearm strength at home.
With a weight range of 5 to 52.5 pounds per dumbbell, it’s perfect for progressive overload, allowing your hands, wrists, and forearms to gradually adapt to heavier loads and longer holds, which is essential for building functional grip strength.
Every repetition forces your hands and fingers to stabilize and control the dumbbell, engaging the forearm flexors and extensors more than traditional fixed-weight dumbbells. Exercises like bent-over rows, dumbbell holds, Romanian deadlifts, and farmer carries become powerful tools to enhance grip endurance, improve wrist stability, and develop the type of support grip that translates to both lifting performance and everyday tasks.
The standout feature of the SelectTech 552 is its ergonomic, knurled handle, which offers a secure, non-slip surface. This ensures that your hands remain fully engaged throughout every rep, reducing slipping and forcing active grip engagement. Its rapid adjustment mechanism allows you to quickly switch between weight increments, keeping your forearms under constant tension and maximizing the time under load for finger flexors and grip muscles.
This adjustable dumbbell also provides a safe and space-efficient option for home gyms. Instead of multiple fixed dumbbells cluttering your workout space, you get one compact dumbbell capable of replacing a full rack. This encourages more frequent use, which is crucial for improving grip strength over time.
Versatility is another strong point. You can perform single-arm isolation exercises, allowing each hand to work independently, correcting potential strength imbalances. Static holds, farmer carries, and rows with the 552 dumbbell actively engage your grip muscles, preparing your hands and forearms for heavier compound lifts like deadlifts and pull-ups.
In short, the SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbell is more than a home-friendly dumbbell: it’s a grip development powerhouse. Combining adjustable weight, ergonomic design, and versatility, it provides a highly effective way to strengthen your hands, forearms, and wrists while supporting a wide range of full-body exercises. Consistent use leads to better grip endurance, wrist stability, and lifting performance across the board.

Hi!
I really like these dumbbells.
I need to save space in my home gym and I also feel they’re very stylish. I recognize the price is a bit step.
And I also appreciate the tips you have given concerning not throwing them around as if we were Hulk.
But pondering it all, I have made up my mind, I’ll take them.
Thanks for this review.
For durability go for PowerBlock series. They too have fairly quick weight changing mechanisms but durability is off the charts compared to this gear.
Those who have no habit of throwing dumbbells on floor, SelectTech is good option since it’s beautiful item combined with sophisticated engineering.
I went over to a friend’s place and saw him training with these dumbbells.
I immediately liked them and even tested them there. I appreciate how versatile they are concerning changing weight.
My friend also warned me about those Chinese initiations.
I’ll be careful when I receive mine.
Thank you very much for this review.
These Chinese replicas is a hilarious topic in & of itself. It pays off big time to believe folks & be on guard to not become a victim of these knock-offs. They look sharp, like the real thing, but usually fall into pieces after a month of use.
Thanks Henry for putting all your effort to do this review about selectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbells.
It is detailed and informative.
It’s true that it’s a bit expensive, but I think it ‘s a good investment for a home based gym.
As it saves time and space ,why not go for it?
Thank you!
If complex engineering & saving space are the features you’re looking for, then yes.
In a way, these dumbbells look like furniture itself, blending into environment.
